Description
1968 CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE
NUMBERS MATCHING, L36 4-SPEED
1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 427/390 4-Speed
This 1968 Chevrolet Corvette convertible was ordered new from Glockner Chevrolet Company of Portsmouth, Ohio, on March 5, 1968. The original retail order specifies Safari Yellow paint over a black vinyl interior along with an L36 427ci Turbo-Jet V8, an M21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, a 3.36:1 Positraction rear axle, power steering, power windows, a telescoping steering column, and an AM/FM radio. The car retains the numbers matching L36 motor. A cosmetic and mechanical refresh was performed approximately 15 years ago.
The car was initially titled to Jean S. on March 20, 1968, and remained with its original owner until July 1982. The accompanying records include Ohio, Kentucky, and North Carolina ownership documents, period service stickers, purchase receipts, factory literature, and vintage photographs. Mileage documentation begins below 27k miles during the first owner's tenure and progresses to 41k miles at the most recent documented transfer in April 2024. The Corvette is currently showing 42,009 miles.
Exterior
The original retail order and accompanying option-code notes identify factory paint code 984, Safari Yellow. The Corvette has had 1 repaint in the factory, Safari Yellow color. Period photographs included with the car show it wearing Safari Yellow paint, bright rocker trim, chrome bumpers, Rally-style wheels with trim rings and center caps, and side-exit exhaust.
A handwritten notation in the documentation identifies the side-exit exhaust as a later-added N14-style system associated with the 1969 model year. The car was not originally invoiced with factory side exhaust. Factory rockers, removed during side pipe install, are included in the sale.
The third-generation Corvette debuted for 1968 with concealed headlights, removable windshield-wiper access panels, front-fender vents, and four round taillights. The convertible body rides on a 98-inch wheelbase and incorporates fiberglass body panels over a steel frame.
Interior
The cabin was ordered with black vinyl upholstery and is shown in period photographs with bucket seats, a center console, a floor-mounted four-speed shifter, a three-spoke steering wheel, and the factory-style instrumentation. Everything works as it should, including the fiberoptic lights on the center console.
Factory equipment listed on the original retail order includes:
- A31 power windows
- U69 AM/FM radio
- N36 telescoping steering column
- N40 power steering
- Black vinyl interior trim
An operating-instructions booklet for the Chevrolet AM/FM radio and stereo adapter is included with the documentation.
427ci L36 V8
Power is supplied by an L36 427ci Turbo-Jet V8 that was factory rated at 390 horsepower. The L36 used a Rochester four-barrel carburetor, an aluminum intake manifold, hydraulic valve lifters, and an air-injection emissions system for 1968.
The original retail order and accompanying handwritten option summary both identify the L36 427/390 engine. The documentation does not contain photographs of the engine-pad stamping, casting numbers, transmission stamping, or rear-axle code; those items should be photographed and verified before making a numbers-matching representation.
Four-Speed Manual Transmission
The original order specifies an M21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission. Chevrolet literature included with the car lists ratios of 2.20:1 in first, 1.64:1 in second, 1.27:1 in third, and 1.00:1 in fourth.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a G81 Positraction differential with a 3.36:1 final-drive ratio. Power steering was also listed on the original order. Four-wheel disc brakes were standard Corvette equipment for 1968.
